Let me preface by saying that my 12 year old Sears Craftsman side mower with 22″ cut finally gave out. So, all my comparisons are against this mower…
I received my Poulan Pro 21-inch 625 this week and cut the grass for the first time today. Out of the box, this was an ease to put together. I added the oil (included) and topped it off with gas. I primed it 3 times as the directions said (expecting it not to start the first pull since this was the first time use). The thing started right up and was purring like a kitten. Since I avoid self-propelled mowers because they constrict my fast walking pace, I was hoping for an easy, maneuverable mower to push. With the large back wheels, above average front wheels, and fairly light frame, I found it remarkably easier to push than my old 22″ Craftsman. I had to sacrifice 1″ on the blade, but I think I make up for it in time and effort with the ease of push.
I always had my Craftsman wheels set at the next to highest setting to mow through my thick lawn (tall fescue). I only use the bagging option when I’m mowing over leaves, so I decided to try the mulching option and set the Poulan to the same wheel setting as my old set-up (just trying to find my perfect set-up). The mulching worked great, but with my thick lawn, it was a little too “clumpy” for me. The mulching would probably work best later in the summer when the lawn is a little less thick and is a bit baked (as we always get in NC hot summer months). So, I added the side chute next. It worked much better for my thick lawn. I found the wheel setting to be a bit too low still, so I moved the wheels back to the highest possible setting. It worked like a charm. The clumping stopped altogether and my lawn looked better than ever.
Next time, I’ll try the mulching option on the highest setting just to see if it will work without major clumping, but I came away with a very positive opinion of the mower. Stylish, lightweight (though quite a bit of plastic ~ so we’ll see how it holds up), and a good clean cut, and I give it 4 1/2 stars. Since I used the highest wheel setting and the lawn wasn’t super high or anything, I’m a bit worried on how it will perform if I ever do get behind in my mowing and have a longer than normal lawn to mow. I imagine I’ll have to bag at that point to avoid clumps, but I’m sure that’s fairly normal.
I’m happy with my purchase and looking forward to using it again next week!

Am unable to give actual use of this mower as it arrived with concealed damage to rear wheel bracket causing wheel to be cocked. Bracket bent, and as of now, (have had machine for over 3 weeks) I have been unable to get satisfactory results from Poulan or its online service sites for replacement of the proper bracket so wheel is properly aligned vertically. I believe the mower will work well once this problem is resolved, but so far have not been able to put oil in engine as repair requires mower be placed on side to remove wheel and mounting bracket. Strangely, the Poulan service web site has no info or record of this particular mower model, and a letter to Poulan has as yet to be replied to after over a week and a half. If I can get a new wheel bracket I can replace it myself and start using the mower…..so far I have been stonewalled on this item……. RPQ
